The author views museums as complex entities in which both art and architecture are parts of a larger whole, in addition she views collections as ritual structures. In this perspective the Louvre museum in Paris and the National gallery in London are treated as examples of the transformation of the European princely gallery in the public art museum. Following this she discusses the creation of major art museums in the United States and private collections that have become separate museums or separate museum wings. Finally attention is given to museums dedicated to modern art.
